We also went to Otavalo which is the next town over. There is a river that separates Cotacachi and Otavalo. Otavalo is a larger town with a population of about 80,000. They are well known for their textile products. There is a large outdoor marketplace where you can buy woven items and jewelry. The market is open everyday but on Saturday you can find the largest selection of vendors with their wares. I took a few pictures of the marketplace.
On the outskirts of Otavalo, you can hike to Peguche Falls. It is about a 15 minute hike from the parking lot but well worth it. There were a lot of high school kids at the falls trying to throw each other into the water. They were having a lot of fun but we were worried that someone might lose their footing and fall down the falls. But they must do this all the time and no one was getting hurt.

ReplyDeleteLove the wonderful pictures! The gardens are gorgeous!! When there in December, Dave & I liked Cuenca but the diesel fumes did bother us quite a bit, as well as the noise. We feel like we might want to explore being out of town a bit. I know Jim & Rachel have recently decided that Cotacachi is more to their liking. We didn't visit there, but kind of wonder if we would like it there or would it seem too small & offer too little. I hope in your 3rd post you'll give insight into your's and Mike's overall take-away from being there.
ReplyDeleteHi Angela - Thank you for your comments. We enjoyed Cotacachi because it was small. I've never lived in a city per se (just the suburbs), so I wasn't prepared for the noise and activity level that there is when you live in the heart of a busy city. It's fun because there's always something to do or places to go, but it was nice to get away from the noise. Cotacachi is a very small town (it reminded me of the old TV show "Mayberry RFD"). I think the weather might be the same as Cuenca, and it is lower in altitude so breathing was easier. You should go and see what you think.
