Getting an Ecuadorian Driver's License (Part 3 of 3)

Finally the day arrived to actually get the driver's license.  Of course there are steps that have to be followed, but before you go to the Agencia Nacional de Transito (their version of our DMV), you should study for the online test.  This can be done by obtaining a copy of the exact test (with answers) by going to the government office mentioned above and paying $1 for the test, or by printing it at home from the link below.  And you can also take practice tests online through the following link:  http://www.ant.gob.ec/index.php/testlic.

After you have studied for the test, take the following documents with you to the Agencia Nacional de Transito which is located on Calle el Salado near Alfonso Cabrera.

  1. Original and a copy of your Cedula
  2. Original and a copy of your Censo
  3. Original blood type card you received from Cruz Rojo
  4. Original Permiso de Aprendizaje (you received from the driving school)
  5. Original Certificado de Conductor No Profesional (you received from the driving school)
  6. Must be at least 18 years old
  7. Must be able to read and write Spanish
  8. Must pass the vision test
  9. Must pass the online theory test (which you studied for already at home)
  10. Must pay a fee of $38
After you have accomplished all of the above, your picture will be taken and you will be issued a driver's license.  Whew, what a process!

  1. The censo has been abolished. They did not ask me for one. I was able to submit a letter from the California DMV that allowed me only to take the written test and vision test. I got the letter by request via email so the whole process was easy from Quito.

  2. I got my license this week. It feels good to be legal.

I was able to skip driver school because I have a license in California. ANT is the department of motor vehicles. I went to the one in Quito. ANT requires a form to be filled out which they gave me when I showed my California driver license. Once I got all the paperwork together, I return with the form filled out. I attached color copies of the front and back of:

    1. A letter from the California DMV saying that my license is currently valid; a translation of the letter, translated in Ecuador and then notarized*.
    2. A copy of my California license
    3. A copy of my cedula, passport and visa, but not the censo (which I don't have) because it has been abolished.
    4. A copy of a card from the red cross saying what blood type I have.

    2. Thanks Patty.

I forgot to mention that ANT also tests for reflexes in three separate physical tests. The whole process took about 5 hours.

  5. New info: No driving school is needed now in 2016. Just an apostilled copy of your drivers license from home, your cedula (no censo), your current drivers license, $135 deposit into ANT at banco pacifico, blood typing card, psychomotor exam (eye exam) and passing the test. Test questions are free online or cost $2 a book in front of ANT
