Presidential Election on Sunday, February 17th

To answer any questions about the election, please see the following information from our friend, Veronica Maldonado from the Cuenca Chamber of Commerce, who consulted with Mrs. Cecilia Heredia from CNE.

"Foreign persons that have legally resided in the country for at least five years and have been inscribed on the electoral register can vote in the 2013 elections that will take place on Sunday, February 17th, as it is established in the Constitution and the Code of Democracy, Article 10, Section Three of the Suffrage of Rights, on those entitled to vote in the Ecuador.

"It should be clarified that the vote is optional for those of you who accomplish this requirement. At Cuenca´s Chamber of Commerce, we would recommend that you vote since the law in Ecuador says that for any procedure in the public or private sector requires you to present the voting certificate. If you choose not to vote you must pay $8.00 at CNE in order to get your certificate.

"Cecilia Heredia from CNE recommends to foreigners that have their Ecuadorian Cedula to check if you are registered.  She told me that sometimes the systems includes people that have their Cedula even if they haven´t been living in the country for 5 years. To find out if you are registered and the place where you need to vote visit the website www.cne.gob.ec and click on "Consulta tu domilicio electoral" (Check your voting address) where you need to provide your Cedula number and you'll immediately know whether to vote or not.

"I hope this information is useful for you.  If you have any other question regards elections I´ll be happy to help you with them."    By Veronica Maldonado.

  1. We've had our cedulas less than a year and we just discovered we're registered already!

    1. Good news. Hopefully everyone will check and will vote in the election if they're on the list.
